A photo on a French CV is optional: it's neither required nor banned in 2026. It's still common in traditional sectors such as retail, hospitality, sales and many SMEs. In finance, Big Four, consulting, and international or tech companies, a clean CV without a photo is now the standard.
Is it banned to put a photo on a CV in France?
No. French law forbids discrimination on appearance, origin and other protected characteristics, which means an employer can't make your photo a selection criterion. It doesn't forbid you from including one. France debated the anonymous CV (CV anonyme) in the 2000s, but it never became a general obligation, so the photo stayed a personal choice.
When should you include a photo on a French CV?
Include one for:
- Retail, hospitality, real estate and sales roles
- Many SMEs and traditional French companies
- Customer-facing roles where presentation is part of the job
Leave it off for:
- Investment banking, private equity, Big Four and strategy consulting
- International companies and tech (Paris start-ups, gaming studios, global brands)
- Any posting written in English or explicitly asking for a CV without personal details
What should a French CV photo look like?
Professional, recent and simple: chest-up, neutral background, business attire, natural expression. Avoid cropped holiday photos and selfies; French recruiters notice. Place it in the top corner of a single-column layout.
Will a photo affect how the ATS reads my CV?
The photo itself doesn't, but where you put it can. According to HAIRED's analysis of 10,000+ CVs, 73% had at least one critical ATS error, and layout problems (text boxes, sidebars, floating images) are among the most common. A photo in a sidebar or text box can make the parser jumble the text next to it.
