The photo is optional on a Europass CV, and for EU institutions you should leave it out. For other applications, decide by country: include one for Germany, Belgium, Switzerland or Spain; it's optional in France and the Nordics; leave it off for the UK, Ireland and most Dutch employers.

Is a photo required on a Europass CV?

No. The Europass editor lets you upload a photo or leave the field empty, and both are valid Europass CVs. Europass is a format, not a rulebook: the convention of the country you're applying to decides whether a photo helps.

Should you add a photo when applying to an EU institution?

Leave it out. The European Commission, the European Parliament, EPSO competitions and EU agencies such as the European Medicines Agency recruit through their own application forms and published selection criteria. A photo adds nothing to that assessment. Always follow the vacancy notice: if it specifies a format (sometimes Europass, sometimes its own form), use exactly that.

The same applies to most international organisations in Brussels, Luxembourg, Geneva and The Hague.

Which European countries expect a photo on a CV?

Country Photo?
Germany Yes, standard
Belgium Yes, near-universal
Switzerland Yes at local firms, no at Anglo-Saxon firms
Spain Yes in the general market
Luxembourg Yes locally, no in finance and EU institutions
France Optional, sector-dependent
Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland Optional
Netherlands Optional, usually left off
UK and Ireland No
EU institutions and agencies No

Is the Europass CV format good for passing an ATS?

It parses reasonably well because it's structured, but it tends to be long and generic. According to HAIRED's analysis of 10,000+ CVs, 73% had at least one critical ATS error, and layout problems (text boxes, sidebars, floating images) are among the most common. If you're applying to private companies, a shorter CV tailored to each posting usually performs better than a full Europass document.

Want a Europass-style CV that's also ATS-ready? HAIRED's Resume Builder supports European formats with optional photo, and the free ATS checker shows whether your current CV passes. For the full country comparison, see the European CV photo guide.
