Short answer: a management consulting resume is one page, a single column, with education and experience led by bullets that each show an action, a measurable result and the scale it happened at. Firms read hundreds of these, so the format is conservative on purpose: the content carries the weight, not the design.
This guide gives you the structure, example bullets, and the mistakes that get resumes screened out. It covers the major strategy firms and the many others that use the same standard.
What does a management consulting resume look like?
A standard layout, top to bottom:
- Header: name, email, phone, city, and LinkedIn
- Education: school, degree, graduation date, GPA if strong, relevant honors (first for students and recent graduates, after experience once you have several years of work)
- Experience: reverse chronological, 3 to 5 bullets per role
- Leadership and activities: clubs, volunteering, and sports where you led something
- Skills and interests: brief, specific, and honest
Use one font, a clean single column, and no photos, icons or skill bars. It is the same layout that applicant tracking systems read best.
How do I write consulting bullets?
Every bullet follows the same shape: action verb + what you did + measurable result + scale or context. The reader should be able to understand the impact in about five seconds.
Weak bullet:
- Responsible for improving the sales process for the team.
Stronger bullet (illustrative):
- Redesigned the lead-qualification process for a 12-person sales team, cutting time-to-first-call from 5 days to 2 and lifting conversion by 18%.
More patterns you can adapt (these are examples of structure, not real results):
- Led a team of 4 to build a pricing model across 3 regions, informing a $2M annual budget decision.
- Analyzed 18 months of customer data to find the drivers of churn, and presented the findings to the COO, which led to a retention pilot.
- Founded a 40-member student consulting club, running 6 projects for local businesses per year.

How do I show consulting skills without consulting experience?
Most applicants have not worked at a consulting firm. The screen is about the same underlying skills, so show them through whatever you have:
- Structured problem solving: a time you broke a messy problem into parts and chose what to do
- Quantitative work: analysis, modeling, forecasting, A/B tests
- Leadership with influence: getting people to act without formal authority
- Communication: presenting to senior people, writing for decision-makers
Choose bullets that map to those four, and make sure each has a number.
What should I leave off a consulting resume?
- A photo, graphics or two-column layouts. They add risk and no value.
- Vague duties like "responsible for" or "worked on".
- Buzzwords with no evidence (team player, hard-working).
- Anything beyond one page. If it does not fit, it is not the best material yet.
- Typos. A single error can sink an application at firms that prize attention to detail.
How do I get a consulting resume past ATS?
Many firms use an applicant tracking system before a person sees your file. According to HAIRED's analysis of 10,000 resumes, 73% had at least one critical ATS error, 61% had formatting errors (tables, columns or graphics) and finance-related resumes matched on average only 38% of the keywords in the job description, with 62% below the 40% line. See the full study.
Practical steps:
- Use a single column and standard headings (Education, Experience, Skills).
- Use the same wording as the job post for skills and tools you really have.
- Export as a text-based PDF or .docx.
- Check what an ATS actually extracts.

How do I prepare after the resume?
The resume gets you the first conversation. Case interviews are the next gate, so start practicing early: structure the problem out loud, do mental math, and summarize a recommendation at the end. Our ATS guide and CV analyzer cover the resume side. HAIRED's Resume Builder has single-column templates, including a Harvard-style one that fits this format.
